Today, we drive safer cars on safer roads; decades of advertisements and public information campaigns have made most of us safer drivers. Despite this progress, the number of auto accidents and fatalities nationwide is still quite staggering.
In 2008, there were almost 6 million car accidents in the U.S., which led to more than 37,000 deaths. More, automobile accidents are causing death for people between the ages of three and 34 in this country.
Improvements in technology is trying continuously to help bring those numbers down, but the bottom line remains that most car accidents are the result of human error. The best way to reduce the risk of being involved in an accident is to practice safe driving behaviors. Whether you’re just learning to drive or you’ve been behind the wheel for decades, it’s a good idea to review some basic rules for safe driving.
With the increasing number of vehicles on the road, car driving safety has become extremely important. When driving, it’s always wise to follow all the traffic rules and regulations. Here are some essential driving safety tips.
Road Safety Tips:
...
... *Left & Right Overtaking:
Remember, it’s an important thing to be known. Most of the roads have multi lanes you can overtake on both the left and right. Remember that when you want to change your lane, indicate your intention immediately.
*Expressway Exit Lanes:
Lanes on either side on freeways and expressways may be Exit Lanes. If you are going straight through on a freeway make sure you stay in the middle lane, as you will come across a sign to exit otherwise.
*Road Traffic that joins Expressways:
One of the road behaviors in USA is that drivers that join onto expressways assume that they will be left into gaps in the road traffic without coming to a stop. So please be aware of this on the roads!
*Exit Markings on Expressways:
On some motorways, particularly in the UK and Europe you will be used to warning signs counting down to when you are approaching an exit. But this does not generally occur on US roads, so be careful!
*School Buses:
You are not permitted to overtake a school bus i.e. which is in yellow color from any direction on a two way street when it is in a stationary position and the red lights are flashing.
*Event of an Accident:
Unfortunately if you are involved an accident, remember that you must remain at the accident scene and call the Police, or wait until they arrive if someone else has contacted them. Please don’t run away that will cause more serious problems to you.
Driving Safety Tips:
*Seat Belts:
Make sure you have you’re wearing your seat belt at all times, while driving. This applies to front and rear passengers, and also for the provision of child safety seats/restraints is required. In some USA states, this is compulsory by law.
*Car Headlights:
Make sure for safe driving, & to have dimmed headlamps on at dusk, in fog, and in rainy conditions. Take care on rainy roads –or else lack of proper awareness could cause loss of control.
*Drunk & Drive:
Alcohol causes a number of impairments that leads to car accidents. Even at very low blood-alcohol levels, intoxication reduces reaction time and coordination and lowers inhibitions, which can cause drivers to make foolish choices.
At higher levels, alcohol causes blurred or double vision and even loss of consciousness. Drunk driving isn’t just a terrible idea — it’s a crime. In the U.S, getting caught behind the wheel with blood-alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 or higher will probably earn you a trip to jail. Many States have very strict drink-driving laws – so the message is, if you are going to take a drink, do not drive.
*Route Plan:
It is important to plan out your route in the US before you set out, make note of what roads you will be taking. Invest in a good roadmap, and check the Internet for any more details if you require. Plan very well, especially on the way to an unknown place or city.
*Lock the Doors of your Vehicle:
Keep your doors and windows locked if you feel you should – at your own discretion. Lock any valuables in the boot of the car which is known as the trunk in the USA. If you are based in the same hotel or self catering apartment throughout the duration of your vacation, then only take absolute essentials with you when you are travelling in your vehicle.
