Kovalam is among the most famed beaches of Kerala. Situated at a distance of around 13 kilometers from the capital city of Tiruvananthapuram, Kovalam is a captivating venue of Kerala. Kovalam stands for 'orchard of Coconut Trees'. As the name indicates, Kovalam is interwoven with lofty coconut palms all over. Settled amongst picturesque environment, Kovalam is also known as the 'Paradise of the South'.

Kovalam came to the spotlight in 1920s when the Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bai of Travancore built her beach resort here. By 1930s, the European guests of the Travancore Empire noticed the tourism prospective of Kovalam. But it was the mass inflow of hippies in the 1970s that propelled Kovalam into a major tourist destination of the country. Before long, the sleepy fishing hamlet of Kovalam metamorphosed itself into the most favoured beach destinations of the nation.

Kovalam beach is 17 kilometers long, and comprises of three beaches spaced by boulder outcrops. The three beaches - Lighthouse, Hawa, and Samudram - collectively form the famous crescent of Kovalam beach.

... three and acquired its name from the old Vizhinjam lighthouse sited on the rocky projection (Kurumkal hillock) here. It is the most patronized beach of Kovalam. The beams of the light house give an otherworldly essence to this beach at night.

Hawa Beach (Eve's Beach), the second largest beach in Kovalam, got its name from the topless European women who used to throng the place. It was the first topless beach of India. Topless bathing is banned now. It has high boulder capes with a tranquil blue-water cove. Hawa beach portrays a highly romantic picture on moonlit nights.

Samudra Beach is separated from other beaches of Kovalam by a large boulder. Samudra beach can be arrived at by de-touring past Kovalam junction or by walking along the bulwark. The waves' lashing on the boulders underneath is one of the most fascinating sights of Kovalam.
