Diabetes is one of the most rapidly growing chronic diseases of the present time. The disease has been spreading its wings taking millions in its fold. Diabetes or Diabetes mellitus as it is known can prove to be fatal unless regular care is strictly followed. The disease has the capacity to affect vital parts of the body if not controlled. In fact, doctors rightly call it a silent killer today.

What’s worse, is that there is no total cure for this dreaded disease. However, doctors believe that if not prevented, it can surely be delayed. Diabetes can be majorly categorized into two types: Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. While the former is relatively uncommon in India, the latter is spreading fast amongst Indians. And considering the pace the disease is spreading in the country, it gives an indicator that the coming years may not be very pleasant for many.

Doctors feel that one of the main reasons for the large number of people to be affected by diabetes across the world is lack of awareness and knowledge. Seeing the urgency of the situation, today, several hospitals have come up all over the country, ...
... which solely specialise in Diabetes and its management. These hospitals have also been organizing different events and campaigns to create awareness about the disease.

There are a fair number of diabetes hospitals in India today, particularly in South India. MV Hospital for Diabetes, Chennai, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Speciality Centre, Chennai, Dr. A. Ramachandran Diabetes Hospital and Indian Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai, Diacon Diabetes Speciality Hospital, Hyderabad, Samatvam Diabetes Endocrinology Centre are few of the common names.

Diabetes Thyroid Hormone Centre at Delhi, GD Hospital and Diabetes Institute, Kolkata and the Kanungo Institute of Diabetes Specialities, Bhubaneswar are some of the other major diabetes hospitals in India. This apart, there are other major hospitals in the country which today have diabetes units to deal with the disease, indicating the seriousness of this dreaded disease.

Kanungo Institute of Diabetes Specialities is one of the largest multispecialty hospitals in India. Located in Bhubaneswar, the centre has adopted a multidisciplinary approach to diagnose and treat all complications of Diabetes under one roof. Recently, the hospital was in news for opening the first diabetes foot care centre in the State of Odisha in Khurda.

With a goal of Institutional empowerment & infrastructural development for providing diabetic foot care services in Odisha, K.I.D.S as the technical partner for implementation of Cuttack Diabetes Research Foundation (CDRF) in collaboration with World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) & Government of Odisha is implementing the ‘Institutional Empowerment for Diabetic Foot-Care’ project in 6 vulnerable districts of the State namely Cuttack, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Sambalpur, Keonjhor, & Ganjam.

Manned by a multidisciplinary team, these centres would not only act as referral points for addressing diabetic foot complications but also create awareness on the importance of foot care among diabetics.
