Diabetes Education In India - A Long Way To Go!

Even as India today has made several advances in diabetes treatment, education remains the cornerstone of diabetes management. Diabetes education is a weapon that can be used to counter this killer disease that has been spreading its deadly tentacles at a fast pace. People need to know what they can do to help prevent or decrease the risk of complications of diabetes.
Although diabetes education in India still has a long way to go, in the last few years number if initiatives have been taken both by health organisations/hospitals and voluntary outfits as well, to spread the importance of diabetes education and train people accordingly.
Since 2007, Project HOPE in cooperation with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has been implementing a diabetes educator project throughout India. India, which carries the largest case burden of adults with diabetes, has traditionally lacked medical professionals to fill the important diabetes educator role. Through the India Diabetes Educator Project (IDEP), Project HOPE is helping create a strong force of diabetes educators to help patients with diabetes learn self-management ...
... skills to live long and productive lives. Participating health centres throughout the country nominate nurses and dieticians to be trained as Master Trainers. The graduates then teach other health care workers in diabetes self management education (DSME) through a six-month distance learning approach.
Then there are organisations like the Diabates Foundation (India), Indian Diabetes Education Association, Coimbatore Diabetes Foundation and many more which are spreading the importance of Diabates Education in India. Even hospitals dedicated completely for diabetes like Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre in Chennai or the Kanungo Institute of Diabetes Specialities (KIDS) in Bhubaneswar have taken the pledge to carry forward the message of spreading awareness on this dreaded disease and its related complications.
Thinking beyond, some medical college and hospitals are also offering courses in Diabetes Management like the Professional Diploma in Diabetes Management course by Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, Pune. KIDS, Bhubaneswar has also started imparting 2 certificate programmes of IGNOU namely Certificate in Diabetes Care for Community Worker (CDCW) and Certificate In Home Based Care Providers (CHBCP). The
courses have been developed to build up a community level workforce to work in diabetic clinics, health centres at community level and in diabetic clinics in hospitals. No wonder, all these initiatives will help controlling the far reaching effects of Diabetes in a much better way.
