Almeria - A Very Old City
Almeria is a very old city, which has existed right from the days of the Iberian civilization. However, it was during the rule of the Moors that the city gained tremendous importance. Almeria is very well known for its beaches and gets its name Almeria which in Spanish means “Mirror of the Seas.” This place gained so much importance during the eleventh century that it became the cultural as well as the economic center of Spanish culture.

La Alcazaba is a fort that dates back to the period of the Moors. This fortress is located on a hill from which one can get a clear view of the Almeria city. One can get a clear view of the gulf of Almeria from this fort. One also gets to view the Barrio de la Chanca cave quarters below this hill. This small district is filled with cave homes and is unique and very colorful. Gypsies and fisherman are the residents of this district.
The Museum of Almeria is a place that is worth visiting. One gets to know more about the history of this culturally rich city. The museum has a lot of artifacts and information that dates back to the pre-historic period. One can get to see the remains of Iberian culture, Muslim/Moorish culture and other civilizations that have made a mark in the city.
