IDFC Mutual Fund was earlier the Standard Chartered Mutual Fund, and before that, was known as ANZ Grindlays Mutual Fund. The Fund was constituted as a trust according to the provisions of the Indian Trusts Act, 1882, on December 29, 1999. IDFC Mutual Fund is sponsored by the Infrastructure Development Finance Company Ltd.,(IDFC). As its contribution to the body of the Mutual Fund, IDFC has given a sum of Rs.30,000 to the Trustees.

Established in 1997, IDFC is a private sector enterprise made up of a consortium of private and public investors, with its operations professionally managed. Its shares were listed by public offer in August 2005, the shareholding list comprising of the Government of India, FIIs, FDI, and the general public.
