Hip Surgery Helps Relieve Discomfort

There are many benefits of hip surgery, including improved range of motion, reduced stress on the joint, and elimination of pain. Surgery is often necessary when the cartilage around the femoral head wears down and the ball doesn’t move as easily in the hip socket. There are two types of surgical procedures used in this case; hip resurfacing and hip replacement. In resurfacing, the femur is shaped and resurfaced to only remove a small amount of bone and the process is ideal for mild joint problems. Replacement is for worse hip conditions including arthritis. For this, the top of the femur is removed and a metal shaft with a prosthetic ball at the end is attached. In some cases, a new socket is also required.
There are a few considerations that should be made prior to planning hip surgery. The first is that in many cases the benefits from the surgery only last for around 10 or 15 years and even then may require a second procedure. Additionally, there is often a waiting list for these procedures in Canada that make relief of painful symptoms take longer than expected.
Surgery is usually ...
... followed by a short 4-6 day hospital stay, followed by sessions with an occupational therapist who works with the patient to adapt to the changes to the hip and get used to a walker or crutches. Over time, and with therapy, it is possible to eliminate the use of the walker or crutches as the body and hip are better able to handle a stronger physical load. In most cases, this depends on the type of surgery, age of the patient and the desired activity level the patient wishes, and a doctor will advise on these matters.
There are additional considerations if one is considering doing the procedure out of the country which is an emerging trend as healthcare costs rise in the U.S. and wait times increase in Canada. There are many affordable options for hip surgery abroad that do not come with diminished quality but do come with a dramatically reduced price tag. This is largely due to the increased buying power of the dollar and positive currency exchange which North Americans can benefit from. Be sure you are choosing accredited hospitals by the global standard Joint Commission International (JCI) though, a body that accredits tens-of-thousands of U.S. hospitals. This will confirm you will e treated at the very top global facilities. In addition, it is always important to ensure you have adequate time for rest and recuperation before flying home.
