Why Is Long Term Care A Family Issue?

When someone in the family has lost the ability to perform his ordinary day-to-day activities it’s not only that person who gets affected but the entire unit. The government and many private organizations that are committed to improving the long term care industry encourage every American family to gather reliable long term care information that will prepare them financially and emotionally.
Long term care (LTC) offers a wide range of services ranging from in-home care, assisted living, adult day health care, to skilled nursing care, rehabilitative care, hospice care, and many others. Its market ranges from newborns and infants to the oldest senior citizen in the country.
It is not synonymous with medical care because LTC does not only address the health care needs of individuals with medically diagnosed diseases. It also provides custodial care which includes helping an individual who can no longer perform independently his activities of daily living (ADL) like eating, bathing, and toileting due to an illness, infirmity, or a disability.
Most people who acquire LTC are either ...
... in the terminal phase of an illness or suffering infirmity. The Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) said majority of LTC recipients require three years of care, on average, but there are others that go on to five or 10 years.
All families should have a concrete LTC plan because the annual cost of care can easily ruin their finances. Even a household that earns $500,000 annually should not act complacently because in less than 20 years their money will have no value anymore as the cost of care is expected to increase fourfold.
In-home care recipients are currently spending $43,472 every year for a home health aide plus $41,184 for homemaker services. Once LTC costs quadruple, nobody will be able to pay from out-of-pocket.
According to LTC specialists there are many ways that one can plan his future health care needs. However, he must see to it that his mode of plan will enable him to receive extensive LTC coverage in his choice of LTC setting with minimal out-of-pocket costs.
To be able to secure that kind of plan, he is advised to recognize his future health care needs first. It would be absolutely impossible for one to produce a useful LTC plan if he does not even know what he needs in the health care aspect, and how much money he is capable of spending.
An individual will only be able to recognize his future health care needs if he visits his doctor on a regular basis. The present state of his health and his family’s health history will determine the level of care that he may potentially require someday.
Once he has that figured out already, the next thing that he should do is to study the cost of care in his area. Of course, he will deal with higher figures if he is expecting care 20 years down the road but as early as today he can start familiarizing himself with the rates of LTC facilities as these will matter to his plan.
Everybody should get a fill of long term care information as often as he would of sports news and Hollywood gossip. Consulting a financial adviser, elder care specialist or a long term care insurance (LTCI) representative will also be advantageous.
