Wayanad - No Frills Destination
Wayanad is a no frill holiday destination offering tourists the simple pleasures of life. Wayanad is believed to have derived its name from the combination of two Tamil words Vayal and Naad, Vayal meaning Paddy field and Naad meaning land thus, Wayanad meaning 'land of the paddy fields'. Another belief states that the region was formerly known as Mayakshetra (Maya's land) which became Mayanad and then finally became Wayanad.
Wayanad is a complete paradise for nature lovers and is more of a restive region wherein you relax and rejuvenate enjoying the simple pleasures of life; however there are several interesting tourist destinations present in and around the region for instance, Chembra Peak, Neelimala, Meenmutty Falls, Chethalayam Falls, Pakshipathalam, Banasura Sagar Dam, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Muthanga Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Tholpetty, Jain Temple, Edakkal Caves, Pazhassi Raja's Tomb, Pookote Lake, Sentinel Rock Falls, Kanthanpara Falls, Sunrise Valley and much more. A trip to the local markets is also a must, renowned for its coffee, tea, cocoa, pepper, plantain and vanilla.
Along with the shopping and sightseeing, the pleasant surroundings of the region offer the perfect setting to enjoy light adventure sports activities like nature walks, trekking, hiking, etc.
