Take a Tour
There are lots of ways to get to the Grand Canyon, including road, rail and air. The Grand Canyon railway has been around for over a hundred years, having taken its first trip to the southern rim in 1901. The railroad provided a link to the canyon for the Fred Harvey Company, which was responsible for the majority of the historic buildings at the south rim and today you can follow the original route to the canyon.

Renting a car and driving out to the canyon gives you the independence to choose your own schedule, but it is a long trip so be prepared for a hot dusty journey and possibly an overnight stay. A plane or helicopter is the fastest way to get to the canyon and gives you plenty of time to explore properly once you are there.

Get Wet and Wild
The very best way to see the canyon is from the Colorado River which runs through it and is responsible for the ever-changing rock formations. One of the most popular Grand Canyon tours is a boat trip on the river and by extending your trip to a few days or even a week you can have one of the best adventure holidays ...
... in the world.

Tours as long as 14 days take you all the way through the canyon, exploring tributaries and camping overnight in specially selected sites, with the chance to take hikes and swim in the river at various points. You can choose a tour which will not go over white water if you prefer a gentle cruise to the excitement of rapids.

Many people choose to explore the canyon on foot, which is a great way to see everything but you must make sure you are properly prepared. Take plenty of water and do not attempt to go to the canyon floor and back in one day - many people have tried this and had to be rescued.

See the Sights
The southern rim has many historic buildings, such as the Watchtower and Hermit's Rest, as well as plenty of viewpoints that you can also find all around the canyon. Two Indian reservations take in parts of the canyon - the Havasupai, where you can see amazing waterfalls and the Hualapai, which includes the glass Skywalk at Eagle Point which is a must-see. Both reservations require a fee to enter, which is usually included in pre-arranged adventure holidays.

The Grand Canyon Park has a surprisingly large number of animals, from coyote, elk and mountain lions to squirrels, hummingbirds and the very rare Californian Condor. The Grand Canyon rattlesnake is pretty and won't harm you if you keep your distance, which is also true of the skunks. Although the squirrels may seem tame, they do bite, so respect all the wildlife and keep your distance

The Grand Canyon is an exciting and diverse landscape. With white-water rapids and gentle meandering pools, pretty hummingbirds and nimble mountain sheep, it will provide a different experience from minute to minute and is a great place for adventure
