Sandpaper – Providing A Smooth Finish To Your Furniture
Sanding gives your unfinished furniture a smooth and quality finish. Sandpaper is widely used for sanding purposes in the woodworking industry as well as other industries. It is available in a wide variety of grits, with and without coating. The article discusses the abrasive for wooden furniture in more detail.
When you want to give your furniture the complete look, applying multiple finishing coats will not help you out. To give your furniture a smooth and lustrous appeal, it is advisable to use a good quality abrasive for rubbing down the surface of unfinished furniture.
In order to give final touches to your furniture, you must use sandpaper. Basically, sanding is the process in which the wooden furniture is rubbed down in different steps. The grade of sandpaper
is altered during the process to get the best finish. The rubbing down is initiated with a rougher grade of sandpaper and is finished using a finer grade. The work of sandpaper is a lot similar to that of a chisel, saw or any other tool used for cutting. The particles on the sandpaper are made from numerous sharp edges which cut the wood just ...
... like the saw blade.
Two grades of sandpaper are available in the market – Commercial and Industrial. Anyone can find the commercial grade sandpaper in hardware stores as well as home project centers. On the other hand, the industrial grade sandpaper is used in industrial applications only. It is manufactured using fine quality materials and is designed to be used in the production process.
Being a very important abrasive, sandpaper is used for different surfaces. It flattens the rough surfaces giving them a smooth touch. Further, it helps in the removal of small particles from an object's surface. If you want to remove a layer of paint or other material from the object, using sandpaper is the best way of doing it thereby leveling the surface of the object.
The manufacturers of sandpaper take special care of the adhesives that hold the abrasives on the paper. Besides considering the grade of grit, it is also necessary to factor in the force which will be applied during sanding. Another factor that should be taken into account is whether the sandpaper will be used manually or in a machine.
For woodworking, there are four major types of sandpaper abrasives: aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, garnet and ceramic. However, garnet and aluminum oxide are mostly used by the woodworkers. Due to its high degree of friability, aluminum oxide is one of the most preferred choices by woodworkers. When handled with heat and pressure, it fragments and creates new edges. Owing to its self-renewing property, this abrasive has a longer service life than other sandpapers.
Another very essential abrasive used by woodworkers is garnet, which is a natural abrasive. However, it is not friable like aluminum oxide, because of this, it deteriorates more quickly. This does not cause any damage since garnet makes the surface of the object smoother when compared to aluminum oxide when they both have the same grit number. For the final sanding of furniture, granet is the perfect choice.
Various options are available for people seeking high quality sandpaper belts, disks, sponges and other abrasive materials. Searching on the web will be a great way to find a reliable supplier of abrasive materials. You can go through their offered products and services and compare their prices. Moreover, you can contact the supplier who meets up to your expectations.
