Today so much importance is placed on the risks to your health by continuing to smoke, yet quitting is not an easy task. When you decide to quit you will need to do some preparation before you do so: set a date to quit in the near future and stick to it; let family and friends know so they can help, and perhaps find a friend who also wants to quit who can share in your journey. Quitting is hard and it is important to understand why and when you smoke in order to change your patterns to help you give up for good: when you understand this you are ready to set your quitting date.

Before you reach that date you should also approach your doctor for advice on the matter - this will be extremely important if you have any other health issues. Smoking is addictive because it contains the drug nicotine which is why you will experience cravings when trying to quit. Nicotine replacement is not the only thing that will help you give up smoking, and it is not successful for everybody. Due to this it is also recommended that you help yourself by trying to reduce your stress, since stress leads to cravings. You could try an exercise routine to keep you healthy both physically and mentally, as well as sticking to a healthy diet which you will also be able to discuss with your doctor.

Most importantly, to be able to quit you must remain positive. There may be times when you feel stressed and times when you take this out on those who care most about you. They will understand, and the most important thing to remember is that you do not need to go this alone. When you do experience cravings breathe deeply and keep yourself busy, and always remember that they will pass. The important thing to learn is that there are a number of methods for you to try, and you must keep persevering until you find the one that suits you as an individual.
