Feasible Alternatives To Email To Send Large Files
Moving your work files between your work and home computers, tablets and smart phones can be a real pain. Although there are dozens of ways to transfer data, not all of them are feasible. Common options include CDs, email, USB drives, external hard drives, etc. Each of these has their own set of problems. External hard drives, CD’s and USB drives are difficult have to be carried at all times to transfer data. Emails are currently the most popular option, but they are limited by the volume of data that they can carry. Besides, they aren’t really secure. Here are some common alternatives to email:
SkyDrive: With the Windows Live SkyDrive, you can store 7GB of space for free. It’s easy to use as well; all that you got to do is to create folders on the site and then upload your files on these folders. The empty space can also be shared with friends. 7GB may not be a lot of space, but they’re enough to store 350 CAD files .The uploaded files can be shared via a link. You can even shares these files on Facebook and Twitter. It’s also integrated with Windows Live Mail which means people can upload photos to SkyDrive ...
... and then email your friends the link. This is so much better than uploading single photos as email attachments. It is ideal if you are an infrequent user, but for those who frequently need to transfer data, the space isn’t enough.
DropBox: DropBox is the brainchild of Drew Houston and has more than 50 million users who can store and transfer large files over the internet. This cloud based service has several benefits. Some of it include effortless file synchronization, easy to install, supporting file sharing, showing history of actions, compact OS integration etc. Also, there’s almost never a downtime. But storage can be a problem for free users. It allows users to store only 2B of data. Paid members will have to $199 to store 100 GB of data. That is almost $149 dollars more than SkyDrive to store the same amount of data. It can sometimes be confusing to locate files.
Google Drive: Google recently combined the power of Google Docs and free storage space to come up with Google drive. You can install Google Drive like a local client on Windows and Mac and use it share it with friends and family just like DropBox and SkyDrive. Space and security however are a major concern. You need to have a Google account to access Google Drive, and with the Company’s latest privacy policy update, Not many are willing to risk their information.
