Many people see such cards as an invasion of privacy and perhaps they would be if the law demanded that everyone carried such a card all the time and had to show it on request. However, even though such a thing is not considered necessary or is even approved of, there are many cases where those kinds of cards are used and they are actually essential for security.

Identification cards are carried by such people as health care workers who need to have their identity visible to both patients and other staff. This keeps patients safe from being treated by anyone who is not authorised to do so.
