Traveling with a child offers a unique set of challenges. There are routines and regular habits that are comfortable for children, which can make transitions into a travel schedule stressful for parent and child alike. Fortunately, there are also several things that you can do to help offset these traveling woes. Some of them are really quite simple, such as allowing your child one stuffed animal to come along with them in their travels. It's usually best that their very favorite doesn't come along as you can never be completely certain that the toy won't be lost, but usually a special traveling animal will become a very treasured friend quite quickly.

For those who will be flying, always use the option to choose your own seats. That way, you can pick out the seats that will best suit your needs. There are online resources that will allow you to see which seats on the airplane have the most leg room and other such advantages. Once you're on the plane, seating order matters. If a single parent is traveling with more than one child, it is best that they place themselves between the two children who are likely to ...
... need the most attention. If two parents are traveling with multiple children, it's usually best to split up two and two, or two and three. On long flights, switching back and forth between kids can help both the parents and the kids keep their cool. If you are so lucky as to have children that can sleep on the plane, there might even be a little time for the two adults to sit together, which is a pretty special occurrence when you've got little ones!

When you travel, it might be best to use travel strollers rather than your bulkier everyday strollers. Not only do many travel strollers fit into an overhead compartment, but the fact that you're now able to walk through the airport with a stroller means that you're not going to be dealing with your youngest being completely wiped out (and entering the whiny phase) by the time they get on the plane. Likewise, if you are on vacation somewhere, the last thing you want to deal with is carrying around forty pounds of exhausted child. That wears everybody out, and not in a good way. Even if your kids like to walk beside the stroller more often than they ride, it is better to be prepared for the end of the day, and you can also use the stroller to carry your bags in the meantime.

When it comes to overnight travel, sleeping in a new place can be hard enough for adults, not to mention children. If you are traveling with a baby, you can't expect every place you go, especially if you are staying with family and friends, to come equipped with a crib, so bringing along a baby travel bed can be a real lifesaver. It's also great to have around for naps and when you need a momentary play pen. Travel cribs come in all different sizes, and most fold down to a decent traveling size so that it is easy to take with you wherever you go. As your kids get older, there are travel beds that can work for them too- most kids love having their own little space to sleep in, and if it's one they are already familiar with, all the better.
