In today’s world, it feels like everyone is doing just about everything online. Whether it’s banking, shopping for shoes, looking for a relationship or searching for an apartment, you can do it all with a few clicks.

Looking for auto insurance quotes quotes is one of the more popular things people are choosing to do online. If you plan your search carefully enough, it is a far more efficient way to compare rates from several companies, and know you’re getting a quote that is really right for you.

Before you dive into your search, here are a few tips for you to get the most out of it.

Tip #1: Do Your Homework

For the fastest, most efficient search – make sure you’ve gathered all of the necessary information before you start. This includes:

your current policy information* (calculate how much you pay monthly and annually, and have those numbers on hand)
your driver’s license
your vehicle registration

*If this is the first time you’ve ever quoted for auto insurance, do some research ...
... into what kind of coverage your province or state requires you to have. Like most things, this can also be done online.

Tip #2: Beware of Scams

The Internet is full of fraudsters. And auto insurance is no exception. In fact, insurance is one of the most popular and oldest forms of fraud in existence.

You will likely come across a few companies appearing to be legitimate, but in reality they’re trying to steal your money. There are a few ways to deal with this threat.

Exercise caution: Be leery if something seems to good to be true. Don’t submit any of your personal information (especially any financial information) until you know the company is legitimate.

Google them: If an online insurance company is a fake, you probably aren’t the first person they’ve tried to rip off. One search of their name will likely reveal some pretty telling user reviews if they aren’t the real deal.

Enlist some assistance: There are several third party sources that can investigate a company’s track record for fairness, financial stability and customer service. One such source is your province or state’s department of insurance.

Tip #3: Don’t Discount Discounts

If you’re on the hunt for the lowest rate possible that will still meet your needs, you should also be looking for discounts. You might be surprised by how many different variables make you eligible to pay even less on your auto insurance.

Do you have a good driving record? This could mean a discount for you.
Do you have added safety or security features on your vehicle? These could make you pay less too.
Do you have a young driver in the family with a high grade-point average? You could get a substantial discount for that.
Do you have house insurance? You could see a much lower rate if you purchase auto insurance from the same company that covers your house.

Tip #4: Read the Fine Print

Once you’ve found a company that gives you a quote you’re happy with – and you’ve researched them and confirmed their legitimacy – there are still a few things you need to be mindful of before you sign your new policy agreement.

Find out if the policy states that ‘new factory’, ‘like kind and quality’ or ‘aftermarket parts’ may be used for body shop repairs. If it does make such a statement, you need to decide whether this is the right policy for you, particularly if you own a relatively new car. You might prefer a policy that requires the insurer to pay for original manufacturer parts.

Overall, go over your policy with a magnifying glass to make sure it includes everything you’re expecting. It’s easier to modify before you sign than to fight it afterward.

Tip #5: Out with the Old

It may seem like an obvious step, but while you’re caught up in searching, comparing and reading over your new insurance policy – don’t forget to formally cancel your previous one.

If you follow these tips you should be in good shape to find and compare auto insurance quotes online. And not just a good one, but one that’s good for you.

Happy searching!
