Child-bearing is considered to be the high point in every woman’s life. It’s one of the most rewarding experiences not only for a mother but also for the father of the child. But it’s also a time when women need to be most careful about their bodies and avoid physical exertion. Pregnant mothers need to also be careful of their overall lifestyle. Some women can also have complications in their birth and to avoid it a timely ultrasound examination must be conducted. But with advancements in medical imaging expecting women can make use of 3D ultrasound to get a clear picture of their fetus.

Due to limitations in technology, 2D ultrasound is reducing in popularity and more and more hospitals are installing 3D ultrasound to get a clear picture of the baby in the mother’s womb. The real difference between 2D and 3D comes from the very same technology itself. Instead of sending ultra sound waves at one angle they are ...
... sent at different angles to create a more definitive 3D image. Sound waves that are sent to the fetus at different angles are returned back as an echo and they get processed by a computer to provide a flawless image of the baby.

This technology of 3D ultrasound can also be used to get a more detailed image of the body’s internal organs. It serves the same purpose as a CT scan device or an x-ray machine but it’s able to provide a feeling of depth as compared to other imaging technologies. But this technology is just limited to imaging it can’t show you live movement of the organs. This is one of the best medical advancements in the past decade for medical resonance imaging. It has helped doctors in a big way to provide the right diagnosis or perform the necessary interventions.

For the time being, 3D ultrasound is only being used in obstetric ultra-sonography. The convenience that this technology offers comes at a price and it’s a bit expensive as compared to traditional ultrasound. Olaf von Ramm and Stephen Smith first developed this technology in 1987 at Duke University. The key area of focus of this technology is fetal anomaly scanning. It has been able to provide proper diagnostics for birth compilations and avert them if there is going to be one. This has also paved the way for the next generation of ultrasound that is 4D and it will be able to provide real time movements.

Today there are a lot of medical professionals who practice ultrasound. 3D might still be an expensive way of imaging the fetus but it’s worth the money and it can help you avoid interpretations of 2D ultrasound. Since the FDA and most medical bodies have limited the use of ultrasound the best person to fix a schedule for you if you are pregnant is your doctor. An ultrasound once a month is more than enough. It’s give you a clear picture of the baby in your womb and also be less worried about the pregnancy date of your child.
