Mineral oil, or liquid paraffin is a by-product of crude petroleum. Many skin care products, such as moisturizers and anti-aging creams, contain mineral oil. It is added to creams and lotions because it forms a layer on the skin, and makes it retain the required moisture. On the other hand, mineral oil also acts as a hindrance to the normal moisturizing mechanism of the skin. Its unpleasant and harmful effects include blocked pores and dryness. Dioxane

1,4-dioxane, a derivative of coconut oil, often forms a part of skin creams and lotions. Production of most ingredients of skin creams involves ethoxylation, which forms dioxane as a by-product. As a result, small amounts of 1,4-dioxane often contaminate skin care products. High concentration of 1,4-dioxane in these creams can cause skin cancers.
