Tips For Storing Firewood
There is nothing more appealing than sitting down in front of a log fire for the evening when the nights are cold and dark. If you are lucky enough to have an open fire which can be used to burn firewood, then it is a good idea to ensure that you have stocked up on enough firewood logs to see you through the colder months, so that you can enjoy the warmth your fire provides. There are lots of places to buy firewood from, but once you have bought it, you must be very careful to store it correctly so that it gives you a great fire when you need it.
Moisture
When it comes to firewood, it is generally the case that fresh firewood is not great for the job. The moisture which is present in freshly cut logs means that they do not burn as well as older firewood. If you want to ensure that your fire is roaring, then you should look for seasoned or semi-seasoned firewood which has a moisture percentage of no more than 20%, if possible. This will give you a great fire which will produce few emissions. Firewood which has been cut up to 6 months before you intend to burn it is perfect.
To ensure that your firewood stays ...
... moist, it is a good idea to by a large tarp or plastic covering which will keep them protected from the elements. This will stop them from getting too moist, which could make them very inefficient and ineffective for your fire.
Log Shed
Once you have bought your firewood, you will need to store it in a place where it will be kept dry and free from insect attacks. This is not always easy as there are many creatures which love to make their home in firewood piles but, by building a shed or log store, you can ensure that your firewood does not get too moist and does not get infested.
Air
Your firewood will stay at its best if air is allowed to circulate it freely. In order to achieve this, it is a good idea to store your logs in a log rack which will allow air circulation. This will stop logs from getting too moist or rotting. Steel log racks are highly recommended for the job.
By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your firewood is always in great condition, produces low emissions and heats your home perfectly.
