This article would benefit anyone from domestic customers (like you an me) to estate
agents, property management companies, facilities management companies, grounds
maintenance, and estate maintenance companies.

Skip hire is a popular and well known service across the UK and this has been the case
for many years. In London and most cities across the UK, there are many occasions
when bulky waste needs clearing from premises, but skip hire is not practical or possible.
Examples range from awkward parking or inadequate space for a skip / skip lorry,
to occasions where a clearance of waste needs to happen quickly before a skip hire
permit may be granted are common. If the clearance is an office clearance or builders’
waste clearance, there may not be labour on site to fill the skip. Even when skip hire IS
possible, a skip alternative company is often worth considering and may often be better
value as they include labour and normally a team of 2 per truck. With a skip alternative

Whereas if a skip is not full, you still get charged for a full skip. Often a skip license is
required, and this can take days to sort out and adds to the cost of the clearance

Until a couple of years ago, skip hire was the mainstay of waste collection within
London. Now there are skip alternatives - waste collection companies that will arrive
with a 2 man team with a smart junk truck. They do ALL the loading, and are often
finished within the hour.

Step 1:
Assess the waste you have – often a junk clearance company is cheaper than a skip if
you include the labour they include in their prices. If the clearance is bulky waste, old
furniture, or any junk from an office clearance, you should be able to get a better price
using a skip alternative company.

Step 2:
If you are clearing builders’ waste, make sure the builders don’t double the work load
by over filling rubble bags, or leaving waste in an area that will increase the work load.
The quicker the skip alternative / clearance company can be, the cheaper the bill, as most
companies charge extra for time beyond the free time included.

Step 3:
Arrange your collection – most skip alternative companies offer a 2 hour arrival window.
If they don’t I would question their service. And check that you trust their website. Ask
them to confirm that they give waste transfer notes (don’t even touch anyone who doesn’t
give a waste transfer note- It is highly dangerous as the “producer of the waste” has the
burden of responsibility by law!

Step 4:
Don’t pay until the clearance is complete and you are happy (unless it takes days to
complete and they want part payment- in which case hold some payment back until you
are happy).

Sometimes you may wish to use a skip AND a skip alternative in the form of a junk
clearance company. Many of my customers use both services working in conjunction to
solve bulky waste and builders’ waste issues. Whatever you need, you can normally get
it!
