No one can reason as to why exactly does acne happen, but it is generally believed by many doctors that it is a culmination of many inter-related factors.

The most important factor being the increase in the quantity of the androgen hormones. These are the sex hormones in a male. This happens both to boys and girls during their puberty days. As a result, the sebaceous glands tend to enlarge and hence more sebum is made in the body. In pregnant women, there are many hormonal changes and these are also seen as a cause of acne.

Many researchers are also of the belief that this tendency of development of acne can be attributed to person's genes. These can be inherited from one's parents. Many children with acne were observed and the conclusion drawn was pretty simple: their family history clearly reflected this acne-developing disorder.

A class of drugs that includes lithium and androgens are also seen as a cause.

This can also be attributed to a person's diet and stress-related factors. Vitamin deficiency in the human body is another such factor. But the exact explanation is a hard one to draw. Generally ...
... it is a culmination of one or more of the above stated factors.

Diet Control
One can control their acne by keeping a check on what they eat. If the diet of a person is such that it contains a lot of junk food, chocolates, ice creams, soft drinks etc., this tends to increase the level of sugar in the human body. As a result, the human body reacts by a flow of insulin in order to bring the sugar level down. And insulin, in turn, causes acne.

Medication
For many of us, acne is more than just a skin related problem. It is a social embarrassment of sorts. Physical appearance is important to one and all these days.

For someone whose face has a lighter acne condition, a tropical treatment is advisable.
The product choice is huge, from creams, ointments to soaps and facial pad. Basically, these act by killing the bacteria present in the skin. These bacteria open up the pores in one's skin. Most dermatologists are of the belief that benzoyl peroxide is one ingredient that is essential for acne care and it must be present in every product that promises acne cure.

If your condition is severe, it is generally advised to take pills. The products previously mentioned only partially help these people as their reasons for acne is hormonal over-activity. This pills work within the body to strike a balance in the levels of these hormones.
