How To Find Graduate Jobs
Graduating from university and then facing the “real world” can be very daunting, but rest assured that there are many graduates looking for jobs with the same worries as you. The job market has never been so competitive, but holding a degree can help shape your CV and make you look more attractive to employers. You just have to focus on what skills you’ve obtained and how to stand out from the crowd.
CV-Library.co.uk has thousands of graduate jobs from some the UK’s top graduate employers. But before you charge ahead and start sending out job applications left, right and centre, you should really pinpoint the role you want.
Read Our Five Simple Steps and Get on the Graduate Career Ladder…
Step One: Identifying Your Graduate Skills
Depending on what you’ve studied your employer will probably be looking for more than a degree title. It’s important you identify the transferable skills you’ve gained so you can highlight why you’re the ideal graduate employee. Your CV should clearly list what skills you can offer ...
... the company and why they are relative to the graduate position you are applying to.
If you have work experience, relating to your degree or not, this will also help to highlight how you have used your university skills in a real work scenario. If you are struggling to gain a graduate job, work experience is a great way to gain more skills and show your determination.
Step Two: Which Industry is For You?
CV-Library.co.uk holds over 55,000 jobs in over 70 different industries; that’s a lot of variety to choose from. When you start looking at graduate jobs it can be very overwhelming. Although it’s important to get on the career ladder quickly, it’s even more important to apply to the right jobs. So, now you know what skills you hold you need to find an industry that matches them (and that you’re interested in).
Do some research and narrow down your options to two or three different industries and a few different roles; you will immediately find your graduate job search a lot easier to handle.
Step three: Update Your CV
Now you know what skills you have and you know what sector you want to work in your CV should already be taking shape. As a graduate you want your CV to focus on your degree and describe how you can transfer your knowledge to the world of work. Information about your GCSE grades and the summer you spent waitressing in a local café can come further down.
Step Four: Find Graduate Jobs
Now you should be confident in your skills, what type of job you want and you have the perfect CV ready to hand out…but where are the jobs?
Online job boards, such as CV-Library, are a great place to start. You can search and apply to thousands of jobs directly from your computer and by registering your CV for free, graduate employers will be able to find you.
You can search and apply to jobs from the comfort of your own PC, from the CV-Library mobile app or directly through the new mobile site. Once you have registered your CV with CV-Library you can apply for jobs with just one-click. Graduate jobseekers can also set up their personal Jobs by Email account so the latest graduate jobs are emailed directly to your inbox.
Step Five: Making Your First Application
Now you need to focus on the cover letter. Your CV can be fairly generic, as long as you are applying to similar roles, but your cover letter needs to really stand out. Graduate employers will be inundated with applications from university leavers who have probably all studied similar degrees.
Why should they choose you over everyone else? Your cover letter should highlight your skills but more importantly demonstrate that you have researched the role, the company, and how you will be involved in the team.
Good luck!
