COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States, so learning about its causes and becoming aware of effective treatments for COPD is important for all adults whether currently diagnosed or not. COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a progressive disease that requires specific, consistent COPD therapy to assure that those with this condition are able to enjoy life to the fullest.

When patients need treatment for COPD, it is usually because they have either emphysema which refers to collapse of the air sacs and diminished capacity by the lungs to exchange gas, or chronic bronchitis where the lining of the airways are irritated, enflamed, and create a thick mucus making it hard to breathe – or both. Since the need for COPD treatment develops slowly over time, most people do not develop symptoms till they are at least 40 years old.

The leading problems that could eventually require COPD treatment is smoking, environmental exposure, and genetic factors. Since smokers, even if they have stopped smoking, account for as ...
... many as 9 out of 10 COPD-related deaths, the first approach to treating COPD is to stop smoking and limit exposure to such lung irritants as chemicals, dust, fumes, second-hand smoke, or pollutants.

An important part of COPD therapy is maintaining a good diet and exercise regime in order to keep the body healthy and less prone to infections – a serious concern among COPD sufferers – as well as positive lifestyle practices such as meditation, yoga, or prayer, that combat depression with its potentially debilitating side effects. Treating COPD includes having a mindset of seeing oneself not as a sick person but as someone who must engage in active living on a daily basis.

Lung clearance is another important treatment for COPD as mucus collects in the airways. In these instances, the Med Systems Electro Flo® 5000 Airway Clearance Device has proven to be an extremely effective COPD treatment since the user can focus the force specifically where it is needed to break up the mucus and then expel it using postural drainage or deep coughing or huff coughing.

Even when a person takes all of the right precautions through daily COPD therapy, they may experience times when the symptoms suddenly get worse, or what is called acute exacerbation. When this occurs, the treatment for COPD must often include treatment for a respiratory infection, minimizing the indoor/outdoor temperature differential, or avoiding places with high air pollution.

Thus, management of the symptoms requires being constantly aware of the various approaches for treating COPD.
