General Surgery Jobs: Where Obamacare Will Take Us
General surgery jobs are predicted to increase, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, by 24 % starting 2010 to 2020. This rate is higher compared to the average for all other occupations. The demand to treat injuries and diagnose illnesses continues to rise as the population increases. Apart from that, there is a reported shortage of medical health-related graduates, particularly those individuals who have education in general surgery. Other functions of general surgeons are treating diseases such as deformities (cleft palates) and cancerous tumors.
Most general surgeons work in clinics or private offices, often with the assistance of medical health-related staff that includes nurses and administrators. Surgeons who have specialization in anesthesiology work in a sterile environment, and may be required to be on their feet for long periods especially during surgical operations.
According to the MGMA medical health-related group Management Association, the salary of general surgeons is one of the highest among all professions. General surgeons earn an average of $202,392 per year. Those individuals ...
... who have their specialization can earn a median of $356,885 annually. The outlook for a general surgery job is good. There are good opportunities for general surgeons who are willing to work in rural or low income areas because bring about these places have difficulties attracting doctors.
There is one factor, however, that may cause to bring about some changes on the job prediction for general surgeons, and that is the Patient protection and Affordable Care Act, or more popularly known as Obamacare. There has been much debate surrounding the topic. In fact, the Supreme Court held an oral argument that lasted for six hours on the 26th – 28th of March. They are expecting to come up with a decision before June ends.
There have been many questions asked, and there have been different answers, which depend on the person or party asked. From what we learned about our leaders and legislators, we can say that Obamacare is not a health care reform bill. It is a bill that is intended to reform health insurance policies. It does not reduce the costs of healthcare, and it does not make healthcare affordable for American either. Definitely, the cost of healthcare will continue to rise as well as the cost of the premiums.
Medical health-related practitioners may not quit practicing, but they may practice in a different setting. It is expected that the number of surgeons who work by a fixed salary will increase. That is because bring about people will be left uninsured, and they will not be able to afford private medical health-related services. Consequently, practitioners in private practice will experience a collapse with the number of their patients. Ultimately, the delivery of medical health-related services will incrementally change as more aspects of the Act go into effect.
At present, there is no absolute telling where the Act will lead surgeon’s career wise. There is still a lot more to see as the deeper and hidden articles are yet to surface. We are yet to see the new plane in which the Obamacare will bring general surgery jobs and other opportunities for other medical health-related practitioners.
