A summer vacation spent in Nags Head is a treat for the whole family. There is so much to see and do in the Outer Banks, or visitors can simply enjoy relaxing at the beach. Check out this guide to Nags Head, North Carolina.

Nags Head Origin Story

Visitors have been coming to Nags Head for vacations since the 1800s. The origin of the town’s unique name is even older than that. It is said that the legendary pirate Blackbeard used the island as a base to plunder ships. The legend goes that Blackbeard would have one of his men walk a horse with a lantern around its neck on the towering dunes of Nags Head. Passing ships would see the lantern bobbing up and down as the horse walked among the dunes, and they would be fooled into thinking it was a ship bobbing safely in a port. The ships would then come towards the light and get grounded on the dangerous shoals. Blackbeard’s men would then swoop in and raid the grounded ship.

Kite enthusiasts fill the park all summer long, and visitors can witness some beautiful, acrobatic kite flying. This is also the best place to see the sunrise or sunset on the island.
