The History

Tracing the history of the Colts gets a little complicated, since there have been a number of teams with that name at different points of time in the history of the game. Robert wanted the city to upgrade the stadium or build a new one but the city was not so inclined since the team was not performing well and attendance at the stadium was dwindling rapidly. Matters got to be so bad that Irsay began actively looking for a different city to take the Colts to.

Indianapolis emerged as a good option and with the city offering to fund the Colts in return for a shift there, the Colts moved out at 3 AM on March 29. Many feel that a better word to use for the team's departure would be ‘sneaked out' rather than ‘moved out'.

Such a controversial move could obviously not be without legal wrangling and there was a whole flurry of it. What happened is shrouded in legalese but the outcome was that Baltimore reached a settlement with the Colts under which all the lawsuits were dropped and the Colts agreed to support a new team for Baltimore. Things did not work out as envisaged and in 1993, when it was time to expand the NFL, the Irsay family chose to support other cities for the franchise. This caused a lot of bad blood between the city of Baltimore and the Colts. I am sorry to say, the feud does not look like finishing any time soon.
