Cabinets Maketh The Kitchen: Why Bamboo Is The New Black
Some people say that a kitchen is what makes a home. It’s everything from family hang out to cook’s paradise, as well as being the social hub of the household.
Depending on how you use your kitchen, different furniture and storage arrangements may suit you best. If you’re a keen cook with an impressive collection of little-known spices, you’ll need storage space, and lots of it! If you tend to opt for ready-meals, then a no-fuss, clean-cut arrangement might work best for you.
Kitchen cabinets are the mainstay of any kitchen arrangement. You can get lots of ideas about types of cabinets online and there are a wide range of styles, sizes and materials to be had – everything from hard wood to chrome. But which materials work best?
Believe it or not, woods and other materials go in and out of fashion just like clothes. And right now, bamboo is the new black. Attractive, durable and environmentally friendly, bamboo makes a great base material for home furniture, and more and more people are using it for their kitchen cabinets.
Many people use bamboo cabinets ...
... to give their kitchen an instant, but long-lasting, facelift. There are hundreds of types of bamboo cabinet online, so whatever style you are looking for, there’s bound to be something that will suit your home.
Bamboo is actually a grass, not a tree, and is an environmentally friendly source material because it is so fast-growing. Since only the stalks are harvested, the bulb is left to regrow, and it takes just three years to replenish the material used for bamboo cabinets.
Some cabinet suppliers will go even further to make sure the bamboo and materials they use do as little damage to the environment as possible. So called ‘green’ cabinets are often CARB compliant, which means they contain fewer pollutants, or Volatile organic Compounds (VOC), such as formaldehyde used in hard wood plywood adhesives.
Bamboo is also easier to work with than some hard woods, reducing the need for high VOC adhesives. But just because bamboo is a grass, that doesn’t mean that this material isn’t durable. Actually, it’s harder than oak and just as long-lasting.
As bamboo is easily renewable is it also less expensive than other hard wood options, such as oak or maple. This makes it a great option if you want to use lots of it.
If, for example, you are re-fitting your kitchen and enjoy cooking from scratch, you may prefer to choose kitchen cabinets with a lot of storage space. Besides being attractive to look at, bamboo can help achieve this because of its relative cheapness.
Of course, there’s more to a kitchen than its cabinets, but they’re a great place to start!
