Situated on the banks of the river Yamuna in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Agra is famous for its heritage and architectural beauty. Agra was the capital of Hindustan during the Lodhi and the Mughal dynasties. The city of Agra is home to a lot of splendid forts and monuments including the Taj Mahal.

Agra’s tourism circuit includes mainly Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort which are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Some epics mark the name Agravana to Agra and the city was considered the abode of Aryans. The city of Agra was founded by Sikender Lodhi of Lodhi dynasty. Later the city was captured by Babur of Mughal dynasty. It was during Babur’s reign, some monuments and beautifully planned gardens were constructed in the city of Agra. Akbar contributed a lot to the development of the modern Agra. Akbar was famous for spreading love and brotherhood within various people of different religions and he had even started a new religion called Din-i-llahi. The tomb of Akbar, also called Sikandra, is situated nearby. Sikandra, famous for its architectural beauty, is visited by a lot of people all year ...
... around. The construction of this tomb was started by Akbar himself in the year 1600 and was completed by his son Jahangir after Akbar’s death.

It was during the reign of Shahjahan, the Taj Mahal was built in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal, one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World, built completely of marble and has four towers. Various colours are used for the art work and it took 23 years to complete the construction. Agra Fort, made of red stones, was constructed on the other side of the river Yamuna. Shahjahan used to view the Taj Mahal from the Agra Fort during his last days of his life.

The 10 day long Agra Mahotsav festival is celebrated every year with much enthusiasm. This festival is conducted by the Agra Tourism department at Shilpgram near Taj Mahal. Exhibitions of arts and crafts are also an attraction here.

Shopping in Agra is very important as the city is famous for marbles and Agra Petha, a sweet delicacy. Various miniature models of the Taj Mahal made of marble are available here. The city of Agra is popular for leather items and handicrafts. Sandals, purses and several curios can be found here for sale. The main shopping areas around the city of Agra are Taj Mahal Complex, Kinari Bazaar and Sadar Bazaar.
