WordPress is a powerful CMS and its default installation is also SEO friendly but we need to make it more optimized. If you have decided to go for WordPress, then here are some quick tips to help you optimize your WordPress site.
Use Search Engine Friendly Theme:
WordPress has created a large platform for developers to develop awesome themes & to start a successful business. WordPress is flexible and supports a huge number of themes, but the question is which theme should be chosen?
Besides look and design of the theme, always consider the fact that your theme must be search engine friendly. Now to decide a friendly theme in search engine, below are few ideas.
*First & fore most, theme must be light weighted so that your website can easily load.
*Theme design must be search engine friendly, for e.g. header ...
... section should not consist of larger images.
*Theme must have options of all important tags such as Meta Keywords, Title tag, Meta Description, etc…
*Cute color combinations, which could match with your design.
*Theme must be compatible with all versions of SEO plug-in.
*Your theme must be provided with full customization, without any further coding from your side.
*Have the body text big with clear headings.
Add SEO Components to Each of Your Pages:
Use of WordPress for your website platform also helps you control the major SEO components of yours, like:
*Title &
*Description through the All-in-One SEO Pack.
You can also set up your keyword Meta tag specifically for each page for completeness, but most search engines doesn’t use it in its page ranking algorithm so it’s up to you, to use it. Always focus very well on the
*Title,
*Description,
*Content &
*Anchor text for your links.
Use the appropriate keywords for each page on your site. Remember that search engines consider each page independently and will index the page based on the content it finds only on that page.
Add Relevant Tags Your Posts:
For search engines to index more effectively, WordPress enables you to tag your post with focused keyword phrases. But don’t confuse tags with categories.
Categories are your file cabinet, draw where you file a document under one particular topic.
Tags are used to describe your post in more specific terms that help people find your information.
By properly tagging your posts with relevant keywords, you can help people find and cross reference your post with others. Try to stick with just few tags, because as too many tags will dilute their effect.
Optimize the Database:
There are a few plug-ins, available which can take responsibility to optimize and maintain the WordPress database. You can search the WordPress Plug-ins Directory; you can be able to find quite a few plug-in. Below are two common plug-ins like,
*Yoast Optimize DB, &
*WP DB manager.
Remember that lots of the bigger “Optimization/Caching Plugins” helps with caching & other stuff will do their own optimization as well – so if you have a caching plugin, you might already have this covered. Now days advanced users can also simply use PHPMyAdmin to optimize your WordPress database.
Compress Images of Your Site:
Like compressing CSS and JS files it’s also very good to compress the images of your WordPress site. For this purpose you can have plugin which uses the API of the WP Smush IT and provide the compressed images for your WordPress site.
Use of CSS Sprite is also beneficial in case of reducing the number of HTTP request.
Conclusion:
If you have already had a website and converted it to WordPress, then install the Redirection plug-in and map all your old URLs to the new ones in WordPress. If you don’t do this, it means you may lose any page rank that you have for your old site.
When you insert images, be sure that you write good alt tags for images and think twice about the names of the files before you upload them to help search engines index your images. Note that the search engines now have a specific image search feature.
Using WordPress, review your site now to be sure you are following these tips and helping your website become more popular.
