How To Write An Essay
Good writing doesn’t come in a day. It is a time consuming and effort driven process that improves with time and practice. However, students can start developing a habit of writing by working on simple steps given below:
Finalize an essay topic:
In case a topic has already been assigned to you, you have no choice but, to work your best on the subject. However, if that is not the case you can always start with following:
Understand the type of essay you are required to produce: Sometimes students are asked to write a simple overview on the topic while at other times they are expected to submit a detailed analysis of the topic. When you are asked to write on a general topic, cover important subtopics briefly (preferably under different paragraphs). On the other hand, while writing a detailed report, focus on the particular subject itself.
For example if the topic is human resource management then the student can cover multiple aspects of human resource management in brief points like attraction, selection, induction, training and appraisals etc. On the other hand if the topic is about training, then ...
... only training should be discussed while writing.
Once you have decided the topic you can move to next step i.e. preparing an outline for the essay.
Prepare an outline for essay:
Here you will need to decide what type of feel you would like to give to your essay; whether you want to appear it like distinct jotted points or like a flowing pattern. Once you’ve decided the look and feel of the essay, write main sub points in the essay. You can also give numerals to your headings and subheadings like 1,2,3,4 or I,II,III,IV etc.
Once you have identified all the sub points for the outline, proceed with your thesis statement.
Write a thesis statement:
A thesis statement summarizes components of the essay. It could be a statement stating the topic and the point you are trying to make in the essay or it could be a simple summary of the essay.
Write the body of the essay:
For each subtopic in the outline, choose a different paragraph. Start with the summary of the topic to be discussed in the paragraph and elaborate it further. In the end state your conclusion.
Write the introduction and conclusion:
Introduction and conclusion should be written when the contents of the essay are finalized and paragraphs have been framed.
Introduction is very important to grab the attention of the reader. It can start with an anecdote, a dialogue, a quote of some startling fact. The introduction and conclusion should not be too short. Usual length of a paragraph is between 5 to 8 sentences. Introduction should finish with the thesis statement.
Conclusion should sum up all the important points covered in the essay and state your final perspective. This should not again be too short.
Refine the essay:
Final step of writing is to refine your essay. Check the order of your paragraphs, spelling and grammatical accuracy and formatting.
