Having a fast internet is only the first step toward having a good internet experience. There are so many websites in the internet that getting to the right website may seem a little tedious if you are not a veteran internet user. The usual way to get at the right website is to make use of the services of search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. But that is not all to finding the right website for getting information. There are numerous specialized search engines that are specific to particular topics.

Most search engines are automated and that means they will be working without any human intervention. So it is normal to expect irrelevant returns, but the returns can be very huge; it can be millions of websites in fact. That takes us back to square one. There are many ways in which you can make your searches very specific and to the point. Here are some ways in which you can make a specific search. They are easy to do. With a little practice you can become a master researcher.

A flat one word search is the thing to avoid when you want something that is very specific. For example if you tried to type the word ...
... elephant, the returns may even be a few hundred thousand. If you are in doubt about what I am saying give it a try. Next try ‘elephant eating habits’ and the numbers would have come down to a ridiculously smaller number, but the chances of your finding the right website will have increased many times over. By now it should be obvious to you that, the more you get specific, fewer will be the list, and the chances of getting to the right website will have grown by leaps and bounds. Now it is time to remember that rule one of making internet search is, ‘be specific about what you want’.

When you make a search engine query with a word, the search engine looks into a massive database where every piece of writing has that word in it – in the heading, in the sub-heading, in the first few paragraphs and at the end of article too. It returns everything even though you search query may have been specific. An easy way to overcome this problem is to use the Boolean operators. By using the Boolean operators you can include or keep out certain websites from being listed. The usual result of using Boolean operators is that you get a smaller list from which you can pick the right website with a smaller effort. Rule 2 therefore is, ‘use Boolean operators like + and – liberally when you want a small but relevant list.

Words like and, or, of and other conjunctions are irrelevant to search engines unless used as a Boolean operator. In fact search engines simply discard these words when they look internally into their database when preparing the list to show you. Likewise capitalizations don’t make sense for most search engines. For example typing the words Technology, technology, TECHNOLOGY, “Technology” doesn’t really make sense to them. They will all be treated as ‘technology’. Rule 3 therefore is don’t waste your time capitalizing the words. Also remember that search engines don’t understand questions, periods or even exclamatory marks.

When you are working with Google search engine, look out for the Auto Complete suggestions that will appear like a drop down list. It is a clue to how you can paraphrase your search. In fact you will be awe struck by the various terms that users are already using. Chances are that these terms are more relevant to the information you want, and it also gives you some insight into what others are using to make a search.
