Gold Bars: An Achievable Investment Option
Most people are familiar with the idea of the gold bar – the valuable, gorgeous prize famous for prompting ingenious burglaries of Italian Job fame. This is the currency of kings and your better class of criminal, it’s not for ordinary people. Right?
Actually, more people are starting to buy gold bars as an investment. And they’re not all cartoon villains or fat cats either. Hedge funds have long turned to gold bullion as a harbour against currency crises or economic unrest, but increasingly physical metal is attracting more and more first time buyers.
Gold bullion generally increases its value with time, making it a solid investment and easy to re-sell. Bars come in standard sizes, which make them easy to store, and generally weigh 400oz.
There are certain security measures in place to ensure that gold bars reach a certain standard or weight, quality and purity. The metal should be at least 99.5% solid gold, though many highly thought of refiners consistently create bars that are 99.99% pure.
Buyers of bullion gold ...
... can go through a trader, which sells gold from various manufacturers, or straight to the refining company itself. Traders will generally work with reputable manufacturers to protect their own business and reputation, but the simplest way to check whether your gold is of a sufficient standard is to opt for manufacturers who are accredited by the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association).
This accreditation is a sure-fire way to tell that you will be getting a quality product that is pure gold. Refiners with the LBMA accreditation include PAMP Suisse, Western Australian Mint (The Perth Mint), KCM-SA, Plovdiv, Royal Canadian Mint, Johnson Matthey Limited and Xstrata Canada Corporation.
Gold and silver bars made by a reputable refiner will usually bear the print or hallmark of the manufacturer. This mark is like a quality guarantee – an instantly recognisable seal of approval that makes re-selling possible and means that the bars can readily be converted to cash.
With hundreds of traders in gold and silver bullion across the world, there are readily available sources of information to help you decide whether investment in precious metal is an option for you. The security of physical wealth is reassuring, but also is becoming a popular option for many people.
