Gingham fabric is a type of fabric which has been dyed or printed with a distinctive checked pattern. The most common and traditional Gingham is typically pink or red and white in colour, but the Gingham fabric design is available in a wide range of bold colours today.

Gingham fabric is available with check of all different sizes but, perhaps the most popular and most well recognised Gingham designs feature very small checks which are made up of horizontal rows and vertical columns.

History of Gingham Fabric

Gingham fabric has been around at least since the 17th Century when it was widely available in Europe and America. It was first imported from the east but once it was made available in England and became popular there, it began to be manufactured in cities such as Manchester and provided a great boost to the economy of the time.

Production

Gingham fabric is made from many materials including cotton – which is traditional – and any number of synthetic fibres. It is often treated with special chemicals which are used to stop it from developing wrinkles and creases which Gingham fabric ...
... in its raw state is so prone to. As a result, Gingham fabric is very versatile and cleans very well.

Uses of Gingham Fabric

Gingham fabric is widely used all over the world, for a number of different applications. Perhaps, it is most famously used in the production of old style dresses which were very popular in the 40’s and 50’s and which are now making a comeback but Gingham fabric is also used in the manufacture of curtains, tablecloths, aprons, pyjamas, bed clothes etc.

One area in which Gingham fabric is widely used is in the manufacture of children’s toys and clothing. Thanks to its simple, cute style and durability, it has been a mainstay in children’s garments for many years now.
