Owning a dog is a massive commitment, and that commitment starts when you go to the pet shop and buy a puppy. Choosing a puppy purely based on its “waggly tail” is probably not a good idea, and instead you should be a bit more careful and conscientious when choosing your new dog.

You need to think carefully about why you want a dog, as well as the specifics of your household. Do you have a young family, small children, is your home short on space? These factors and more will all have an effect on the most suitable kind of dog for your needs and circumstances.

You may be tempted to choose a puppy purely based on the way that it looks. Everybody likes cute dogs, however looks are rarely a determinate for personality and behaviour. Instead, there are lots more factors that are much more important than the way your dog looks.

True, you can tell little about the behaviour of a puppy, however it is worth speaking to your pet shop to get an idea of temperament.

A dog is for life not just for Christmas, and so when choosing a new puppy for your home think very carefully, you owe it to yourself and your new dog!
