They are much more susceptible to illnesses than younger people are. In winter they require more attention, both in food, clothing andother things.

Awareness of this problem is a huge problem. Some people know that the problem exists, but many are completely oblivious to what goes on with the elderly and other homeless people. More shelters need to be built as well as soup kitchens. In addition, people should be proactive in making sure that the people know that the help is there for them if they need it. Many elderly people have a great deal of pride and will not seek out the help on their own. Others do not even know that help is available and believe that they will be left to their own devices.

People take advantage of the elderly at times. It is important that friends, neighbors and relatives check on the elderly frequently to make sure that their needs are being met. It is said that it takes a village to bring up the children of our society and the same rings true with the elderly. Everyone should be vigilent on their behalf.
