Lyrics are the soul to any song. Anyone can write lyrics if inspired. Inspiration is the key to it. Writing lyrics is not something which comes forcefully to an individual; it requires the ideas to come naturally. The best part is that no particular format or order needs to be followed. It depends on the artist to pour out his/her ideas freely on a piece of paper. They express one's feelings in a way that no other form of writing can express. A lyricist needs to express his/her feelings vividly through words.

Music can be composed prior to lyrics writing or it can be given once they are ready. Again, no hard and fast rules are followed in this art. The lyricist might want to appeal to a certain class of listeners or might want to please the general public. Anyway, he/she has to stick to his/her ideas and focus on the particular preset goals. Now the question arises how to write lyrics?

Well, first start with being inspired. Once the inspiration starts flowing in, sit down with a pen and a paper or you can even type it out. Initially start jotting down whatever comes to your creative mind. It may or may not rhyme ...
... in the beginning, well that is not much of a prob lem as it will eventually lead to something meaningful. Once you are done, set it aside. Now, read what has been written so far. Analyze it. Break it into verses of desired number of lines. Verses may be of 4-5 lines each. Make the verses rhyme and if not then let them at least be in sync with the melody/music. The length of the song depends upon the lyricist but one thing is to be remembered that melody is the backbone to any song and a chorus of 4-5 lines really gets the melody to sink in. A chorus is the easiest part to write in a song. Now, tactfully place the chorus in between the verses. The toughest part is to decide upon the last two verses. They need to be conclusive yet captivating. Basically the motive of the song should be accomplished. The lyricist must be able to put across his/her exact thoughts and feelings in a way that the listener understands it.

Remember, it does not always have to be about any particular emotion. Frankly, when asked how to write lyrics, it could be said that, even a shopping list could be poetic if done right!
