Britons travelling to India often save money by spending on tickets with airlines offering cheap flight deals only to splurge on long leisurely breaks. It is also essential to heed those currency exchange options to avoid ending up losing out hard-saved holiday money when buying Indian currency or making financial transactions.

Hence it is vital for travellers who painstakingly book airline tickets on cheap flights to India to consider the currency exchange options before-hand to avoid burning a hole in their pockets. Some cash on the barrelhead, debit cards, credit cards, pre-loaded currency cards and Travellers' Cheques, there is absolutely no dearth of currency options for those planning to spend their hard-earned holiday money without incurring dreaded fees like exchange fees.

Cash

It’s always a good idea to have some local currency obtained at the airport to start off the holidays. However, cash remains the most expensive option for several commission and exchange charges levied when making transaction for buying Indian currency. To avoid the poor conversion rates and hefty commission fees at the ...
... airport one can order an exchange online. The currency exchange deals can be checked from the website of the destination airport one plans to travel to.

Carrying much cash around in India is not safe. Tourists should be careful enough to split the amount and use the hotel safe to keep some cash.

Debit Cards

Debit cards are popular options available for those taking flights to India. However, use of debit cards may entail cash withdrawal fees and interest charges besides hefty exchange fees for currency exchange. Nevertheless, travellers can minimise the withdrawal charges by taking out the maximum amount of money required at one time.

Credit Card

Credit card remains the most convenient option for many, right from booking those cheap flights to India to paying those shopping and restaurant bills. Credit cards are generally free to use as long as one clears the balance. Major credit cards are increasingly accepted in majority of retail outlets, hotels and restaurants. Credit cards can also get one the competitive exchange rate deals and are generally covered with consumer rights.

However, excessive or over spending on credit card has been found to be the cause of bloated holiday costs for those who later find it difficult to pay the outstanding money on time and incur heavy interest charges.

Pre-Paid Currency Cards

Of all options, the prepaid currency cards remain one of the best options for those buying cheap tickets on flights to India for leisurely breaks. These cards can be pre-loaded with some cash and can be used like a credit or a debit card. With prepaid currency cards, one can withdraw cash from ATMs, pay for hotel rooms, restaurant meals etc without worrying to pay over the odds. Besides being highly efficient, these cards have lower fees and also give a better exchange rate than cash.

Though, prepaid currency cards are increasingly accepted in the major Indian cities, the card still remains alien for smaller cities and towns. However, these cards can get good exchange rates when making a transaction for the Indian currency.

Travellers' Cheques

Travellers' Cheques can be called the safest of all options. American Express Travellers' Cheques are accepted at popular Indian cities. Tourists need identification documents like a passport while exchanging the traveller’s cheque. Almost all the major Indian banks accept Pound Sterling Traveller’s Cheque. Those with travel to relatively smaller cities can buy Indian National Rupees Traveller’s Cheque from one of the major Indian banks which are more commonly accepted.

Lost or stolen cheques are easily replaceable by the issuer, so they are safe. However, very few Indian retailers accept them.
