Why do many families of school aged children get colds and sicknesses within the first couple months of going back to school after summer vacation ends? It's not the change in weather, as many people like to believe, but rather it is the contact with more germs as your children are spending the majority of each day with a large group of students. Think about everything your child comes into contact with in a day at school- and how many other kids have touched those same objects!

Germs are easily spread from contact, and many germs will live for hours or even days on an object. So if little Johnny is carrying germs for the common cold and uses the pencil sharpener, any child who uses the pencil sharpener after him is going to pick up some of those germs on their own hands. They are likely to get sick if their immune system isn't able to ward off those germs- or at the very least, they bring those germs back home and deposit them on anything they touch at home and it continues to spread the germs around!

Hand Sanitizers

Hand sanitizers contain alcohol and other agents that are known to kill certain germs that are easily transmitted. Studies have shown that families who use hand sanitizer containing 40% ethanol are 59% less likely to spread sickness to other members of their family who also use hand sanitizersthan they are to spread it to people outside of the family who do not use hand sanitizer.

Keep a portable size hand sanitizer in your purse, diaper bag and car to make sure you have it whenever you may need it and soap and water is not available to use. How many times have you used a public restroom to find there is no soap to wash your hands with? Squirt a small amount of your hand sanitizer into the palm of your hand and spread all over both hands to effectively kill most germs you may have on your hands. You do not need to rinse off the sanitizer- it dries quickly and as it does, gets rid of the germs.

Antibacterial Hand Wash

While many studies have indicated that antibacterial hand wash is not as effective in killing germs as hand sanitizers, it's more likely a problem with the way we wash our hands rather than the product itself. It is important that you wash your hands regularly with soap and water, and that you lather for 30 to 50 seconds before rinsing off the hand wash. A good rule of thumb is to sing the ABC song in your head while soaping and lathering up; and finish it before rinsing. Using the right cleanser takes the guesswork out of cleaning.
