$300 Million Facelift For Vegas Sahara

Las Vegas enjoys a deserved reputation as a destination which offers cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages. The $300 million investment in the dated Sahara hotel will turn it into a high design; foodie oriented SLS Las Vegas resort scheduled to open in 2014.

SBE Entertainment bought the Sahara in 2007 and with the new financing plan will move forward to create a 1,600 room resort with other worldly design by French iconoclast Philippe Starck. SLS aims to tap into visitors looking for a refreshing, fun and accessible take on Vegas luxury.

This designer has been working on the SLS South Beach, which will open shortly, and led the design for the original SLS on the border of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles.

SLS will turn the Sahara into a modern playground for gamblers, foodies and party goers by offering a variety of restaurants, nightclubs and meeting venues. Included will be The Bazaar by Andres, a Katsuya by Starck sushi restaurant, and a new approach to the company’s original nightlife concept, Shelter.

The company closed the Sahara in May of ’11 because at the time it was less costly to close vs. trying to continue to run it as a dated hotel. Its famous roller coaster has since been taken down.

The Sahara hotel was featured in the original 1960 version of Ocean’s Eleven.

Las Vegas is the premier tourist destination in the world, according to Senator Harry Reid, who believes its hotels and accommodations are totally unique. The redevelopment of the iconic Sahara hotel will continue this tradition and bring new excitement to the northern end of the Strip.
