While perms and relaxers are a great way to boost your appearance, get a whole new look or try something different, you want to be very careful about what you use, how much you use it, and if the products you are using are actually safe for your hair. What you may not know is that perms and relaxers can actually damage your hair.

Perms and relaxers contain a wide variety of chemicals, all of which are designed to change the makeup of the hair. When this happens, the hair becomes damaged and in some cases, beyond immediate repair. Therefore, knowing when to say no is your best defense against making the wrong hair choices. If you've just begun to notice some hair damage, you may be able to repair hair damage with a variety of products and methods.

The following are some tips, if any of these apply to you, you may want to reconsider getting a perm or relaxer, or adhere to the tips included.

Irritated Scalp – If your scalp has any damage at all, scratches, inflammation, irritation, you will want to avoid using a perm or relaxer. The chemicals used will aggravated the damage and likely cause pain as well.

Baldness ...

Hair Loss Treatments – If you are currently using any form of hair loss treatment, avoid using perms and relaxers at the same time. This is double the dose of harsh chemicals. If you intend to get a perm or use a relaxer, make sure that you stop using the hair loss treatment for at least two days prior to getting the perm.

Using other hair related chemicals – If you use other chemicals for your hair, such as coloring, relaxers, or perms, make sure that you put a good span of time between the treatments. Having a color job done then immediately, having a perm job done can cause adverse reactions in one or the other chemicals. Put as much time between treatments as you possibly can. 6-8

weeks is a suitable time span to wait.

When a product says test first, do it – There is a good reason product manufacturers say test on an inconspicuous area first. Make sure you do this, this can help you avoid massive reactions elsewhere.

Instructions – If you do not follow instructions, you can expect to have some sort of reaction. Make sure the instructions are followed to the letter.

Making sure you are prepared and know when the right time for your perm or relaxer treatment is can help minimize the damage to your hair.
