A large part of the world’s population is found to suffer from various forms of sleeping disorders. In some people, sleeping disorders are in-born or developed naturally while in others, sleeping disorders are brought on by bad hygiene during sleep or improper sleeping practices. There are many symptoms and side effects associated with sleeping disorders, the most common of which is fatigue or tiredness and sleep deprivation in many cases.
One of the commonest forms of sleeping disorder is sleep apnea. The most visible, or in this case audible, effect of sleep apnea is snoring. If you find your partner or roommate to be snoring excessively while they sleep at night, it is highly probable that he/she is suffering from sleep apnea. Often, patients are even found to have stopped breathing for long periods of time, at a stretch – upto over 30 seconds, in some cases.
Due to such complications, patients often suffer from lack of sleep and are prevented from going into deep sleep which is vital as it restores one’s mental awareness and even helps repair muscles.
How Can It Be Treated?
One of the simplest and most effective ways of countering sleep apnea is by the use of a sleep mask. Sleep masks are designed specifically for the purpose of helping one breath more clearly while asleep and also controlling snoring problems. Most doctors will also review a patient’s diet and suggest avoiding certain types of food which are known to cause sleeplessness at night.
Reviewing your sleeping position is also often a good idea as bad sleep positions are known to cause breathing trouble. If a patient has the habit of sleeping on his back or on either of his sides, it is recommended that he change his sleeping position to see if it can result in better sleep. It is also advisable to always avoid sleeping while lying on your stomach as it is known to put unwanted pressure on the neck and the back.
Sleep deprivation can lead to a number of harmful physical as well as mental effects. A good night’s sleep is vital for rejuvenating your body and mind, so if you feel that you might be suffering from any form of sleeping disorder, it is highly advisable that you consult with your doctor right away.
Once you consult with your physician, he will most likely ask you to undergo a few tests and studies to determine the exact cause of your sleeping disorder, following which you will be set up with the appropriate treatment that will nurse you back to good health and better sleep.
