Birth Control And Use Of Intrauterine Device

Intrauterine device or IUD is an extremely personal birth control method. Nobody will ever come to know that you are actually using it. Such a device is discreet and it doesn’t leave behind any kind of packaging or evidence of use that can embarrass you.
According to the manufacturers, IUD proves to be useful and appropriate for those women who have at least 1 child and are in a mutually monogamous relationship. ACOG or the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends IUD for both women who have not given birth and also to teenagers as well. Both of them can benefit from the IUD use.
Contraceptive pills have been a popular choice for women for several years. But the problem is that most females tend to forget taking regular pills. The contraceptive pills have to be taken regularly. This is one major reason why most women look for alternatives to the pills. This led to the development of the intrauterine device which is completely safe and easy to use.
In the United States, there are 2 kinds of intrauterine devices available- Mirena hormonal IUD and Paragard Copper IUD. Mirena and Paragard ...
... are brand names and two major brands of intrauterine devices as approved for use in the United States.
In the article, we will know more about Mirena, a well known brand name for hormonal intrauterine device. It would be interesting to know that the IUDs are generally referred by many other names including progestin IUD and levonorgestrel IUD.
Basically, Mirena kills or damages the sperms obstructing its capability to fertilize an egg. This device does this by means of releasing levonorgestrel which is also known as progestin. Progestin is a type of synthetic matter that annoys the biological activity of natural hormone progesterone.
The progesterone can slow down ovulation during pregnancy. Progestin as present in the device can minimizes frequency of ovulation. It can even change the consistency of the cervical mucus. Third, it thins endometrium which is the lining of the uterus walls. This way it minimizes any chances of implantation.
In general, Mirena is a T-shaped, small, flexible intra uterine device which is placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Such a device can assist in preventing pregnancy for 5 years or so. A doctor usually conducts a pelvic scan in order to determine the position and size of your uterus to position the device. In this regard, a pap smear examination is needed in order to avoid any kind of abnormal cells. Body pressure test and test for any type of infection is also examined. On the other hand, a pregnancy test may be recommended to check whether you are already pregnant.
Your doctor must know whether you are allergic to chemical composition as found in the Mirena IUD. If you are allergic to the composition used, then you must consult your doctor before you decide to use it.
Overall, Mirena is considered safe to prevent pregnancy. It’s just like any other medications, however few women may experience certain side effects like nausea, headaches, tender breast and abdominal cramps.
