Imagine a herd of Corolla wild horses running along the beaches of the Outer Banks of North Carolina’s coast. Who doesn’t dream of wild open spaces and the remarkable history of the Outer Banks just seeing these amazing creatures? For the child in all of us responds to this treasure that the Spanish left behind in the early 1500s when they moved to Florida, leaving behind their livestock including the Spanish mustangs that were the ancestors of these majestic Corolla wild horses. The English colony of Virginia also contributed to this stock, and soon the Outer Banks area was the home to a large colony of beautiful wild horses.
With the Outer Banks region still considered one of the most isolated and under-developed areas in the country, they make the perfect location of one of the more last remaining herds of wild horses in America. North Carolina is justly proud of our wild horses here in the Outer Banks and in 2010 the North Carolina General Assembly declared that the official horse of the state was the Colonial Spanish Mustang, our own Corolla Wild Horses. Visiting the Corolla Wild Horses
Once you have seen pictures of these wild horses you are bound to want to come and see them for yourself. Luckily there are guided tours of the area where the horses live and these will direct you through the wild country of the natural preserve that is their home. In addition you get a chance to see the many kinds of wildlife that share this preserve with our wild horses, including a wide assortment of birds, sea creatures of all types and of course the many varieties of pony and horse that make up our wild herds.
Another great way to see them is to rent a four-wheel drive and visit the area yourself. Please keep in mind that although we want you to enjoy yourself, these horses are wild and are protected by the state. This means you must not come any closer than within fifty feet of any of the wild horses. One of the best ways to see them safely and with a knowledgeable guide is to contact the Corolla Wild Horse Fund and ask about their “Trip of a Lifetime” special opportunity to take part in the documenting of the location of the horses with a herd manager.
No matter how you decide to see them, the Corolla Wild Horses are a unique opportunity to view one of the vanishing parts of America’s heritage. These rugged and yet beautiful wild animals are one of the few remaining connections to our history of the early days of America’s colonization.
