Ear Care
Proper ear care is essential to maintaining good overall hygiene and preventing serious ear problems such as infections and hearing loss. The internal parts of the ear are extremely sensitive and caution must always be taken to ensure the inside of the ear is never damage during routine health care.
One of the most common problems in the ear is the buildup of earwax. A certain amount of wax is necessary to keep the inner ear free of debris. The wax attracts matter and prevents it from traveling inside the ear and causing damage or infection. Many people choose to clean the outer parts of the ear with a cotton swab. It is imperative the cotton swab is not inserted too far into the ear canal, as it may burst the inner eardrum or cause other irreversible damage. A good rule of thumb is to face the mirror when cleaning the ear with a swab. A portion of the cotton should still be visible otherwise the swab is too far in the ear. Besides the outer parts of the ear, care should be taken to cleaning behind the ears, where dirt has a tendency to hide in that area not readily viewed by people. Personal hair trimmers are available ...
... to remove and maintain any hair which grows from the ear. Some of the hair works in conjunction with earwax in preventing debris from entering the inner ear but excessive hair growth can be easily maintained and trimmed with the miniaturized trimmers.
Ear infections are also very common, especially in young children. The build up of fluids in the inner ear leads to infections and if not treated, can lead to partial or total hearing loss. Treatments for these types of infections are most often conducted through a doctor, who will provide prescription eardrops to treat the ears or will prescribe an oral antibiotic to clear the infection.
Another part of good ear care is for those with pierced ears. Both earrings and the ears need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Hydrogen peroxide solutions are inexpensive, widely available, and should be used regularly to maintain clean the piercing areas and earring posts. Some specialty shops which perform the piercing procedures sell other cleaning solutions that are an alternative to the peroxide. Care should be taken to regularly check the earrings for breakage, rust, and damage. When ears are initially pierced, it is imperative the earrings remain in for an average period of 6-8 weeks to ensure the piercing site heals and will not grow closed. It is important the earrings are turned in the ears daily to prevent the healing skin from attaching itself to the earring.
