Out of all the dental treatments available to fight cavities and tooth decay, licking a lollipop is sure to be the least expected method. As we all know lollipops and all other sorts of candy contain high levels of sugar which promote tooth decay so the lollipop were talking about is not the lollipop you find at stores, it is only found at your local dentist.

Microbiologist Wenyuan Shi of UCLA thinks a sweet sucker might help fight cavities and tooth decay, in order to find the active ingredients which kill certain types of bacteria he had to go back and look through his Chinese roots in order to find a herbal remedy which is believed to help fight tooth decay.

After much research Mr. Shi came across an herb called licorice, as some people know this herb has been chewed by members of different cultures in order to help promote dental health.

... and isolate the active compounds, this active compounds were then used to create a lollipop which is sweet (but has no sugar) enhance the active ingredient which helps fight cavities and general tooth decay.

Finding the active ingredients in licorice was a great step because they only kill the "Streptococcus mutans" and leave all other types of bacteria which are actually beneficial to us; it's like trying to kill the weeds around your beautiful flowers, you need to find an active ingredient which will only kill the weeds and not your flowers, Mr. Shi's work came across the one active ingredient which does to job as it should be.

This is without a doubt a great development which will help children fight cavities and tooth decay by doing the one thing they like the most at that age which is to lick their lollipops and eat candy.
