Like all good fighters, though, Napster did not stay down for long. Instead, they reinvented themselves and are once again successful and growing.

Napster is not nearly the �whole story� when it comes to the MP3 revolution. Though leaders at first in music sharing, they were beaten to the punch by others when offering MP3 files for download. Internet Underground Music Archive, MP3.com, LiquidAudio and RealAudio were offering MP3 downloads first. ... competition for Napster. There are also some cutting-edge musical artists who offer MP3 download from their websites; their scope is limited, however, so poses a smaller threat.

The biggest competition that Napster faces is from the folks at Apple who distribute the immensely-popular iPod and own the iTunes Music Store. According to Robert Enderle, CEO and Chairman of the Enderle Group, �I can�t picture many iPod and iTunes users shifting to Napster since iTunes software is so integrated with Apple music players.� In addition to that, iPod owners and regulars at iTunes Music tend to be a very loyal bunch. Enderle is not alone in his thinking, other experts agree there is little to lure users from iTunes � a site many have come to know and trust completely.

Even now, the majority of big record labels continue to refrain from allowing music to be downloaded as MP3 files. They are more inclined to do so if the sites can guarantee adequate protection and proper technology. They may be forced to begin releasing more MP3 files due to the drastic decrease that has been seen in recent years in CD sales. Large numbers of people (especially those aged 16-25) never go to a music store anymore; they download their music from the internet. The technology is so widespread and easy to use; they see no reason to trek to the local mall to buy music. The final straw for the music industry to induce them to release MP3 files may well be the overwhelming success that Apple iTunes and iPod experience. Apple does not produce the only MP3 player, but the iPod outsells every other MP3 players many times over.

Bob Enderle does have some advice for Napster, �Napster will stand a better chance if they focus on the right competition.� Enderle went on to suggest Amazon.com as a good choice for Napster to zero-in on. Why is Amazon worth considering? Unlike iTunes, Amazon is not known first and foremost as a music download site; their focus is spread among other competencies as well.

Ever the optimist, Chris Gorog recently said he was happy with Napster�s progress and felt ready to compete with the �giants� like Apple on amore level playing field.
