Pickup trucks, like their offshoot the sport utility vehicle, have gone from a work vehicle, to a military vessel, to a passenger carrier. The pickup truck has evolved from one of the most accident-prone vehicles, to a strong and stable one with as many conveniences as a luxury sedan. It is also useful that there are varying types of pickup trucks as any other vehicle.

First, there are the "cab" variations of the vehicle—regular cab, extended cab, crew cab, and quad cab. The regular cab is the conventional one, with a small cabin; a single that can fit three people. The extended cab allows two rows of seats, sometimes accessible from the front or with two passenger doors with back hinges, called "suicide doors." Both the crew cab and quad cab have two rows of seats with front-hinge doors; the difference is that the crew cab has wider leg space.

A pickup truck's bed can also vary in size. The standard bed is about five feet long; most regular cab trucks have the standard bed. Some regular cab and extended cab trucks have the long bed, as long as eight feet. Crew cab and quad cab trucks tend to have either standard ...
... beds or short beds, which are only about four feet.

Pickup trucks also come in compact, mid-size, or full-size. All of these trucks may have their suspension adjusted. Compact truck can be very small; as small as a compact SUV. Mid-size trucks are bigger and tend to have long running boards to help people get inside. Full-size trucks are tall and stout, derived directly from the military trucks that carried small troops from their camp to the battlefield.

These sizes also show the vehicle's towing capacity. The Edmonton Ram 1500, for example, is a relatively small pickup truck (regular cab, crew cab, or quad cab) that can carry a quarter of a ton. Its engine can carry 5.7 liters of fuel to run its eight V-cylinders. It can be run in automatic transmission, with makes this four-wheel drive easier to maneuver.

The Edmonton Dodge Ram 2500 can carry a half a ton of weight. It is accordingly bigger and sturdier in appearance than the 1500. Some versions has similar engine as the 1500, but there are others that have 6.7 liter tank to fuel its six V-cylinder engine.

The biggest of these, the Edmonton Dodge Ram 3500 can carry three quarters of a ton. Like the 1500 and the 2500, it can run with an automatic transmission. This four-wheel drive can carry 5.9 liters for an I-6 cylinder engine. If you need more information about dodge vehicles, visit Edmunds.com.
