Space MMO, or massively multiplayer online, games are fun because they combine exciting and well designed video games with a unique social experience that links you with other gamers. Although video games were once thought of as mostly single player adventures, modern games have totally changed that and thrust players into extensive environments where they can interact with hundreds of other people playing the same game. This is achieved because of international servers that connect players from literally every corner of the globe; players around the world can stay connected to their favorite game 24 hours a day. Linked multiplayer video games have an extensive history and have come a long way from the early days when the Internet was still in its infancy.

Games were originally networked together to make space MMO gaming possible in the 1970's, but it was not yet massively multiplayer by today's standards. The genre of space themed games first broke into the realm of multiplayer gaming in 1974 with the release of Spasim, a game that use sci-fi elements in its interface. There was a chat dialogue put in this game ...
... which allowed for a maximum of 15 players to be logged on simultaneously. Having a chat system right in the game was a novel concept at the time, but is now commonplace.

The 1990's brought the incredible expansion of the Internet from a small network of computers to an international system; game developers knew that the Web offered a chance for space MMO's to progress. In the early 1990's there were many regulations that prevented commercial gaming on the Internet so there were very few options for games who wanted to interact in virtual games; some games were popular during this time, however, and charged hourly rates over private gaming networks.

Web regulations were eventually adjusted and gaming developers were able to make more accessible MMO's for their gaming fans. Games were made that were run on a PC but connected through an Internet system that linked gamers around the world. The new MMO's allowed people to play individually, with others, and chat all through one immense gaming system.

Millions of accounts are active for today's most popular massively multiplayer online games, some of which have been online for several years. The new technology available to gamers and developers has allowed the latter to make amazing space MMO games that players around the globe enjoy.
