The Pros And Cons Of A Work At Home Lifestyle

It would be unethical to tell you that being able to work from home is all glitz and glamour...
As with anything in life, there are pros and cons to being able to do so.
However, naturally, I would argue that the pros will pretty much weigh the heaviest for most people.
Still, it’s important to know what you’ll be up against, and that’s why below you’ll find some of the common benefits AND setbacks of a work at home lifestyle.
If you haven’t run away in fear yet, let’s take a look! I promise it’ll be painless...
Pro #1 Of Being Able To Work At Home - YOU Are The Boss
When most people daydream of the work-at-home lifestyle, it seems one of the first things that comes to mind is being able to tell their old boss where to put the position...
Being your own boss pretty much speaks for itself - the ability to control your schedule, whom you do or don’t work with, and perhaps a whole list of other things...
But the reality is there are some cons...
Con #1 - You Are EVERYTHING Else!
When you work at home, you are also your own customer ...
... service, accountant, secretary, marketer, etc...
There is a significantly higher amount of responsibility when you’re the one callin’ all the shots...
Still, a lot of the extra pressure can eventually be eliminated, once you gain some capital and can afford to outsource whatever you can’t do efficiently or just plain passionately...
After all, outsourcing isn’t only limited to the online world.
Pro #2 Of Being Able To Work At Home - Greater Balance Between Career And Family
Another reason many people enjoy the idea of being able to work from home, is it allows for more time with family.
Instead of being chained to a time clock and (or an alarm clock!), you can structure your time to suit your needs...
But, that persistent pest “reality” means that there’s another side to this luxury...
Con #2 Of Being Able To Work At Home - Maintaining The Balance
If you’re a parent, you probably already knew where this was going...
After all, more time with children might be great to have, but it can also make getting work done a bit difficult.
Or, when household tasks start piling up, being right there to stop them might be a tempting opportunity.
However, it’s important to block out a set amount of time each day that you are able to focus on your business.
If you have a hard time pulling yourself away from family, keep in mind that you’re ultimately working toward more freedom and security.
Once you get going, you’ll do fine!
Pro #3 Of Being Able To Work At Home - Tax Benefits! Yeah!
If you have part of your home (or apartment) dedicated to your business (this is key), you can deduct a percentage of your mortgage and utilities.
You more often that not can also deduct other things like office supplies, books, magazine subscriptions, etc...
(Keep in mind I’m not a tax professional, lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. Be sure to ask a professional for their advice to confirm what you can deduct...)
Con #4 Of Being Able To Work At Home - No Company Benefits
It might stink working for someone else, but boy is it nice to have access to health benefits.
Of course, you can pay privately, which is still worth the large expense in the event that a medical emergency occurs.
Really, there are plenty of these pros and cons. Here are two more to consider:
1. No commute vs less social interaction...
2. Greater potential income vs no more steady paycheck...
At the end of the day, it all depends on your preferences and personality. Once you get your business in order, you’ll be able to overcome many different obstacles...
