The bond of wedding not only unites two people, but also their families. Wedding is the preparation of the life which the bride and groom are going to spend together. The marriages in India are believed to be a union that lasts for the lifetime. Marriages are one of the reasons for the families and friends to enjoy and rejoice. Everyone the family waits for the weddings so that they get time to enjoy and meet with the families and friends. The customs and traditions involved in the weddings are really wonderful, and everyone in the family loves to be a part of it.

In the Hindu community, the rituals followed in every wedding is almost same, but the variations can be seen both caste wise and region wise. A clear difference can be seen in the wedding rituals conducted in the northern and southern India. When we talk about southern India, there are lots of differences in the wedding rituals of the four south Indian states. The Brahmin Matrimony in the southern India is the most common forms of Vedic marriages, where one can experience the purest forms ...
... of the rituals.

To start with, the Brahmin matrimony starts with the fixing of marriages, where the parents match the compatibility between the bride and groom by tallying their horoscopes. The horoscope match involves studying the planetary positions during the birth time of the bride and the groom. After fixing of the alliances, the wedding is officially announced with the engagement of the boy and girl, which is attended by the close family members and friends. The engagement in Tamil Nadu is known as the Nitchayatartham. The prospective bride and groom are blessed by the elders of the family, and generally, the engagement ceremony in the Southern India is performed at the groom’s house or the temple, as the temples are the best place to start the new life.

In the earlier times, the wedding lasted more than five days, but seeing the busy lives and the tight schedule of people, the weddings are held over one or two days only.

With vratham, the wedding ceremonies start. During this ritual, the families worship their family deities and ancestors, and seek their blessings. A yellow thread is tied around the wrist of the bride and groom, and after the ritual, the families visit the nearby temple. The groom’s family goes to the bride’s home or the Kalyan Mandapam for the wedding.

The venue is beautifully decorated with flowers and kolams (design patterns drawn on the floor with rice and red mud) are drawn. The entry gate is decorated with banana trees as banana is believed to be auspicious. The wedding procession in Tamil Brahmin matrimony is known as Jaana vasam. The groom and the family are welcomed by the bride’s mother and other female family members. Women also apply a paste of sandalwood, turmeric and vermillion on the groom’s forehead. After the groom is welcomed, the actual wedding rituals are performed, which showcase the cultural heritage of the Tamil Brahmin matrimony.
